A whirlwind of activity

The end of 2023 saw a very quiet Château with almost everyone that was working here having gone on vacation for 3 weeks. Work ground to a halt as the tools went silent, and the halls of the castle echoed with emptiness. We snuggled into our petite living quarters to wait it out and celebrate Christmas and the coming new year. We were fortunate to have two dear friends with us for the holidays, and we passed the weeks in the French countryside quietly in front of the fire. The quietness of December continued tenfold through the first week of 2024. In a pandemic like way the countryside had closed its doors.
January 8th 2024, 8:30am, the gates to the castle were thrown open and the trucks poured in. We went from the absolute silence of Phillip and two cats wandering the halls to workmen filling every floor. The tools have yet to go silent.
Chers lecteursÀ la fin de l'année 2023, le château était très calme, presque toutes les personnes qui y travaillaient étant parties en vacances pendant trois semaines. Le travail s'est arrêté, les outils se sont tus et les couloirs du château ont résonné dans le vide. Nous nous sommes blottis dans notre petite maison pour attendre et célébrer Noël et la nouvelle année. Nous avons eu la chance d'avoir deux amis très chers avec nous pour les fêtes, et nous avons passé les semaines dans la campagne française, tranquillement au coin du feu. La tranquillité du mois de décembre s'est décuplée au cours de la première semaine de 2024. Comme dans une pandémie, la campagne a fermé ses portes.
Le 8 janvier 2024, à 8h30, les portes du château ont été ouvertes et les camions ont afflué. Nous sommes passés du silence absolu de Phillip et de deux chats errant dans les couloirs à des ouvriers remplissant tous les étages. Les outils ne se sont pas encore tus.
Steven and our new employee Sylvain are splitting their time between mortaring the walls of the Grande Cuisine, and adding drywall to four of fifteen bathrooms. Ben is laying brand new chesnut floors in Chambre 9, and the bedroom of our future apartment Chambre 11. Paul, our master woodworker, has finished all of the work in the dining room (it is amazing), as well as a rotted section of paneling in the Entry Hall. Paul will have to wait on the replacement of some of the tall baseboards in the Entry Hall until the electricians complete some of their work. Paul has now officially tackled the Library. Baseboards to be reset and recreated due to dryrot, exterior doors to be shaved, tweaked, and made to function the way they were intended to, and finally he has tackled the mystery of the doors. We have sets of massive double doors in passing between every room on the ground floor. Almost all of them opening inward toward the thickness of the walls. Because the wall are 30 inches thick, an open door never blocks any part of a room, or that is the theory. At some point in the past someone decided, for either unknown reasons, or simply not thinking things through carefully, reversed the direction of three sets of doors. The sets of doors were not simply flipped around, or rehinged, they were swapped between openings, and we have yet to figure out the key to the puzzle… which doors came from which space. In order to solve this puzzle Paul has decided to remove the three sets of doors, (doors, hinges, frames, and all) and move them from opening to opening in order to discover which set will magically go where. I have studied this mystery at length until my head hurt and I suspect that there will be a barrage of photographs sent to me on the morrow.
Steven et notre nouvel employé Sylvain partagent leur temps entre le mortier des murs de la Grande Cuisine et l'ajout de cloisons sèches dans quatre des quinze salles de bain. Ben pose des parquets en châtaignier flambant neufs dans la chambre 9 et dans la chambre de notre futur appartement, la chambre 11. Paul, notre maître ébéniste, a terminé tous les travaux dans la salle à manger (c'est incroyable), ainsi qu'une section de lambris pourrie dans le hall d'entrée. Paul devra attendre que les électriciens aient terminé une partie de leur travail pour remplacer certaines des hautes plinthes du hall d'entrée. Paul s'est maintenant officiellement attaqué à la bibliothèque. Les plinthes doivent être refaites et recréées en raison de la pourriture sèche, les portes extérieures doivent être rasées, modifiées et remises en état pour qu'elles fonctionnent comme prévu, et enfin il s'est attaqué au mystère des portes. Nous avons des ensembles de doubles portes massives qui passent entre chaque pièce du rez-de-chaussée. Presque toutes s'ouvrent vers l'intérieur, dans l'épaisseur des murs. Comme les murs font 30 pouces d'épaisseur, une porte ouverte ne bloque jamais une partie d'une pièce, ou du moins c'est la théorie. À un moment donné dans le passé, quelqu'un a décidé, pour des raisons inconnues ou simplement parce qu'il n'avait pas bien réfléchi, d'inverser le sens de trois ensembles de portes. Les jeux de portes n'ont pas été simplement retournés, ils ont été échangés entre les ouvertures, et nous n'avons pas encore trouvé la clé de l'énigme... quelles portes venaient de quel espace. Pour résoudre cette énigme, Paul a décidé de retirer les trois ensembles de portes (portes, charnières, cadres et tout le reste) et de les déplacer d'une ouverture à l'autre afin de découvrir quel ensemble ira où, comme par magie. J'ai étudié ce mystère en long et en large jusqu'à en avoir mal à la tête et je soupçonne qu'une avalanche de photos me sera envoyée demain.
The electricians continue to move forward. They accomplished one of the largest battles just after returning to work after the holidays. The main electric panel is now connected to the grid. Having run massive electric cables under the central courtyard they were able to remove the house from the original small electric feed, unplug the monster extension cord and hook us up. We have Power ! The rough in for plumbing is complete and now we await the moment when the final string of drainage and supply takes place. At the same time the plumbers and electricians spend some of their time installing infrastructure for the heating system, and a massive pallet of metal air ducting has arrived to begin the installation of the air evacuation system. Massive, super quiet in-line fans will gently suck air from the bathrooms and the kitchens 24 hours a day, taking away undesirable odors and moisture. I have great hopes of seeing the water filtering and softening system installed soon.
Ltes électriciens continuent d'avancer. Ils ont mené à bien l'une des plus grandes batailles juste après la reprise du travail après les vacances. Le panneau élecrique principal est maintenant connecté au réseau. Après avoir fait passer d'énormes câbles électriques sous la cour centrale, ils ont pu retirer la maison de la petite alimentation électrique d'origine, débrancher la monstrueuse rallonge et nous brancher. Nous avons du courant ! Les travaux de plomberie sont terminés et nous attendons maintenant le moment où les derniers travaux de drainage et d'approvisionnement seront effectués. Dans le même temps, les plombiers et les électriciens consacrent une partie de leur temps à l'installation de l'infrastructure du système de chauffage, et une énorme palette de conduits d'air métalliques est arrivée pour commencer l'installation du système d'évacuation de l'air. Des ventilateurs en ligne massifs et très silencieux aspireront doucement l'air des salles de bains et des cuisines 24 heures sur 24, éliminant ainsi les odeurs indésirables et l'humidité. J'espère vivement que le système de filtrage et d'adoucissement de l'eau sera bientôt installé.
Huw the gardener has been pollarding tree after tree after tree, slowly making his way to the end of the 30 linden trees on the mid terrace, as well as preparing beds for spring, and continuing the war of the wild that constantly threatens to take over the small amount of landscaping we have managed.
And what do we (Phillip and myself) do while all of this is happening? We kick back, drink wine, and enjoy the view of course! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa
Phillip continues to work full time, manage the house and the volunteer, as well as take care of all of the needs that I have. Phillip also has to handle the financial end of the massive endeavor (you know “robbing from Peter to pay Paul”) and taking over KP duties on the weekends. He has no time to breathe.
I spend my days in physical therapy, 3-4 hours every morning and an additional session three evenings a week. In between I manage the work going on in the house with continual project planning, on going sourcing of materials, product research and procurement, and overall design and direction. Then I have client work to do, make an attempt to keep up with social media, write to our adoring fans ❤️, and produce videos for YouTube. Life for both of us is fast paced, hectic, and quite often completely out of control, and we would not have it any other way.
Huw, le jardinier, a taillé arbre après arbre, se frayant lentement un chemin jusqu'à la fin des 30 tilleuls de la terrasse centrale, tout en préparant les lits pour le printemps et en continuant la guerre contre la nature qui menace constamment de s'emparer du petit espace paysager que nous avons aménagé.
Et que faisons-nous (Phillip et moi-même) pendant que tout cela se passe ? Nous nous détendons, buvons du vin et profitons de la vue, bien sûr ! Phillip continue à travailler à plein temps, à gérer la maison et le bénévole, ainsi qu'à s'occuper de tous mes besoins. Phillip doit également s'occuper de la partie financière de cette entreprise gigantesque (vous savez, "voler à Pierre pour payer à Paul") et prendre en charge les tâches de KP les week-ends. Je passe mes journées en kinésithérapie, 3 à 4 heures chaque matin et une séance supplémentaire trois soirs par semaine. Entre-temps, je gère les travaux de la maison en planifiant continuellement des projets, en recherchant continuellement des matériaux, en recherchant et en achetant des produits, en concevant et en dirigeant l'ensemble. Ensuite, j'ai du travail à faire avec les clients, j'essaie de suivre les médias sociaux, j'écris à nos adorateurs ❤️ et je produis des vidéos pour YouTube. Pour nous deux, la vie est rapide, trépidante et souvent complètement incontrôlable, mais nous ne voudrions pas qu'il en soit autrement.
